BaliWhiteWater Rafting: Ayung vs TelagaWaja —Which River IsRightfor You?

Bali has two great white water rafting rivers — the Ayung and the Telaga Waja. One is perfect for families and first-timers, the other for experienced adventurers. Here’s the honest comparison.

Introduction

White water rafting is consistently one of the top-searched activity experiences for Bali visitors
— and for good reason. Nowhere else in Bali do you get to spend two hours completely immersed
in jungle, river, and adrenaline, far from the crowds and the traffic. But Bali has two very different
rafting rivers, and choosing the wrong one can mean either a disappointingly tame float or an
unexpectedly intense challenge.

This is the honest comparison you need before you book.

The Ayung River — Bali’s Most Famous Raft

Best for: Families, beginners, first-timers, mixed groups with children

The Ayung is Bali’s longest river and its most-visited rafting route. The 10-kilometre journey
through the Ubud jungle is Grade 2–3 — meaning there are genuine rapids and moments of
excitement, but nothing that requires prior experience or strong swimming ability.

What makes the Ayung special isn’t just the water — it’s the scenery. The river carves through a
deep jungle gorge lined with ancient stone carvings, tropical vegetation, and occasional small
waterfalls. It feels remote in a way that surprises people, given how close it is to Ubud town.

At a glance:

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Grade: 2–3 (beginner to intermediate)
  • Duration on water: approximately 2 hours
  • Minimum age: 7 years
  • Price: USD 35 adult / USD 30 child (7–12 years)

The Telaga Waja River — Bali’s Wild East

Best for: Experienced swimmers, adventure seekers, those who’ve already done the Ayung

The Telaga Waja in East Bali is a completely different experience. At 16 kilometres, it’s Bali’s
longest commercial rafting route. The rapids reach Grade 3–4 — significantly more demanding
than the Ayung, with longer white water sections and a handful of drops that require active,
confident paddling.

The scenery is also different: instead of the Ubud jungle, you’re cutting through the remote
Karangasem valley with dramatic views of Mount Agung’s volcanic slopes. This is one of the least-visited regions of Bali — raw, quiet, and spectacular.

At a glance:

  • Distance: 16 km
  • Grade: 3–4 (intermediate to advanced)
  • Duration on water: approximately 2.5 hours
  • Minimum age: 7 years (recommended 10+ for strong rapids)
  • Price: USD 40 adult / USD 35 child (7–12 years)

What Both Rivers Have in Common

Both routes include:

  • All safety equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle, wetsuit)
  • English-speaking certified guide in every boat
  • Hotel pickup and return transfer
  • Riverside lunch or BBQ after the raft
  • Shower and changing facilities
  • Personal accident insurance

Neither requires prior experience — your guide will brief you fully before you enter the water.

Our Recommendation

Travelling with family or children, or first time rafting? → Ayung River. Close to Ubud,
accessible, spectacular jungle scenery, perfect for ages 7 and above.

Already done the Ayung, or travelling as a group of adults looking for more intensity?
Telaga Waja. Longer, wilder, more remote, and genuinely thrilling.

Can’t decide? Some guests do both on consecutive days. We can arrange that.
